Ok all you math smarty pants, i got a question for ya.

I know a cord of wood is 8x4x4.
so how many cord is there in a pile of wood that is 14x4x1.5? Im having a debate with a friend im sayin its half a cord hes sayin almost a full cord. Some one settle the argument please!

Well a cord is 4x4x8 yes but tightly stacked, a pile is not well stacked so id say your pile will stack out at a little over a 1/2 maybe 2/3. The only way youll know for sure is to stack it

Dammit! My calculations came out to be 4ths.

We homeschool and I used a very similar problem in math for my 12yr old son, just last week. We're stacking our wood on pallets that are 3 feet wide. First I had him calculate the cubic footage in one cord. Then, assuming a tight stack, I had him figure out how long would a 3 foot wide X four foot tall stack have to be to measure one cord. Finally, if I wanted to keep the pile 8 ft long, how high would I have to go? I think I'll give him this one as a follow-up.

For the final exam, I think I'll tell him to split a cord to check his answer with...

o yea now he will be mad at me for giving you homework ideas!!! LOL just dont tell him where u got the question from but nice job on having him split a cord, my kids think im nuts, thy all tried to use the splitting maul and decided that is almost like real work!
