After 15 years of burning wood, I decided to buy a pellet stove. A Harman P-38.
I used to cut up my own fire wood but with people buying up land around here and putting up no trespassing signs
I've had to buy wood the last couple of years. With prices going up this year, I said enough.
One of the things that got me thinking about pellet stoves was my neighbor.
He asked me to watch over his house and load the pellet stove while he went down to see his daughter for Xmas
I was impressed that the stove would run 24 hrs on one bag of pellets on low of course.
Compared to me coming home to a cool or cold house after the wood stove died out and then spending time getting
wood in and then waiting for the house to warm up, then having to get up in the middle of the night to put in more wood.
That's the thing I like about the pellet stove, coming home to a warm house. No more bringing in wood every night and
no more mess.
When I got the Harman P-38 I got a free ton of pellets, to try out different brands. Since then I've bought a ton of Black Hills Gold
for the cold season and a ton of Isabella Michigan soft wood for the shoulder season. Buying pellets is very addictive. If I see that a local hardware store
sells them. I have to try a couple of bags to see how they burn.
So far I'm impressed with the stove and can't wait to see how she runs during the cold months.
The woman who works at the place that I bought the Harman stove, told me that a person goes through three phases in life.
Wood, Pellets and then gas. gas being old folks home I'm guessing lol

Welcome and congratulations on your new stove. The P38 is a nice stove and will work hard and long for you. Have fun!

Wecome rudy426,

Glad you joined us here! I too am an ex-woodburner and I still have it as backup becuase it doesn't require power to run. Those pellets you speak of I have never heard of. I'd like to hear what you think of them. And YES, we need pictures! ;-)

Welcome to the forum, and congrats on the new stove. Lots of nice, helpful people here, and as was mentioned above WE LOVE PICS!!! :cheese: Especially ones of the stove burning.

Enjoy the heat!

Welcome Rudy! I also heated my house only with a wood stove for 8 years, heated a small addition w/pellet stove. I finally made the complete jump this year as well and replaced the wood burner with another pellet stove and couldn't be happier! It's already paid for itself 2x over just in the amount of time alone I have saved processing wood, getting the fire going in the morning, noon & night.

Don't even get me started on coming home to a 'warm' house - I mean I open the door and It's like being at the beach (well a 69f beach that is). I don't know what to do with all my free time now - buy more pellets? So far it has surpassed my expectations and the consistent, steady heat is very welcoming. Hopefully I will share the same opinion on those -20F Jan/Feb nights.

Thank you all for the nice welcome and comments.
I still have my wood stove ( Vermont Casting Encore ) in the same room as the P-38 but not hooked up.
Have it on rollers in case of emergency's. Can't afford a inverter generator like a Honda this season.
That is the only thing about the pellet stove that I don't like. Having a back up power supply.
j-takeman, The pellets that I have bought must be regional. Here are some of the brands that I have.

Black Hills Gold - High btu pellet, Haven't burn them yet but a co-worker has and really likes them.
Badgerland and Rib Mountain - Nice pellets burn o.k., nice heat. Rib Mountain is a hard / soft combo.
Henry County - Haven't burn them yet
Eureka Elite - Haven't burn them yet
Uncle Jed's Cold Remedy - Love the name, haven't burned any yet.
All are premium pellets
Others I have bought are Eagle Premium Bio-Fuel ( pine ) , which is from a local mill and burn good.

So far the P-38 has handled anything thrown at it.
VTrider, It really is like you say. Now I can come home, make a cup of coffee and put my feet up and enjoy
The nice thing is, that I can stay late at work and not worry about a cold house which means more money = more pellets
With three tons of pellets plus buying more local brands does this make me a beginner pellet pig.

Forgot to mention the Isabella Michigan pine pellets.
This is from a company in Lake Isabella Michigan who have been in business since 2010
Nice pellet, lighter in color than the rest and burn good. Nice shoulder season pellet.

You sure sound like a pellet pig to me, believe me it is an addiction.

welcome to the gang, err club maybe cult??
3 tons is a good start to pigginess
I believe you need one more to qualify.........
the head pig will be along soon I'm sure

The Black Hills Gold is another brand name for pellets sold from the Spearfish, SD pellet mill. The mill was purchased in 2008 by Neiman Enterprises. They kept the Heartland brand name also.

Would like to know the difference between the two pellets brands that come from Spearfish - Black Hills Gold and Heartland. Also current prices? Heartlands are expensive here $5.25/bag Cdn. but have some in the hopper right now. They come from our closest pellet supplier.

Lake Girl, Thanks for the info. Yes they are from Spearfish, S.D.
Black Hills Gold sell for $290 a pallet here ( 60 bags ) or $4.85 per bag
The btu rating on the bag claim an average of 8631 and .26 ash
I haven't tried the Black Hills Gold yet. Wanted to try them out on a cold day.
Maybe this week.

Welcome! I am new here as well and this is a great place with a great group of people! Congratulations on the new stove!
