I have a 6500 that also has the 2x800CFM fans. Mine runs on one fan on low and then both fans at any setting above Pr-1.

I do know that with the design of the 8500 (and the 6500), the return intake is small and restrictive. I very common mod that is supposed to greatly increase the air output is to add an opening to the fan maintenance panel on the side of the stove. I believe you can fit a 10" round duct there.
