Use the search feature to search “Barometric Stove” in this forum.

The rear opening is an air intake that has a box inside separating the rear intake from firebox that leads into the top exhaust outlet to allow indoor cooler air into exhaust. The barometric damper adjusts the amount of air to provide a constant draft as set on the damper adjustment. This is what is needed on coal stoves that require a precise draft through coal bed. Cap the rear opening for wood use. This allows cooling of the exhaust gasses and rapid creosote formation when smoke is present using wood.
