This is our first full season with our new Harman XXV so we are still in the
learning phase. When we purchased the stove, we inquired about needing
an outside air kit. The dealer explained that the kit was optional and we do not need it.

However, after lurking on this site for quite some time, I have noticed that the majority
highly recommends them, so now I am confused.
Our home is about 14 years old and stove is in finished basement that is below
grade if that matters.

How do we tell if it really does need an OAK or not?

thanks for your input in advance

Turn on a competing appliance, that is one that exhausts to the outside Like a dryer, gas water heater, furnace, bathroom fan etc.
Watch the flame on the stove if it changes and get's lazy you need it.
Plus since it's in the basement there is already negative pressure.
I would put one in if it were me.

Now for the rest out there if it is on the first floor one can open a window and see if the flame gets more active.

There seems to be no competition with the stove and fans/dryer so far.
But you have us thinking it probably will compete with our furnace because there
is a return duct in the same room as the stove.
The furnace has not turned on once yet thanks to the stove.

Even though our dealer feels it is not necessary to install the OAK, I plan to
contact him and request he install it for us anyhow to ease OUR concerns.

thanks for your help!
