I'm just courious - What stoves would/could keep-up with the original pre-EPA Vermont Casting Defiant wood stoves?

Alderlea T6 ?

Jotul F600 ?

Englander 30 ?

New Defiant 2in1 ?

Anyone have an idea about this? Anyone changed out an original Defiant for a newer EPA stove? Any other EPA stove that could match the original Defiant?

Anyone know the heat output in BTUs and firebox size of the original Defiant?

Thanks!

In terms of feel? Probably something like the Englander 30 or another larger steel stove. And based on some descriptions, the Isle Royale might come close to the feel due to how it likes to burn so hot. The Vigilant, which is smaller, throws heat in the same way I suspect a lot of people describe a steel stove. It can be very harsh. And I mean that in a good way, as odd as that sounds (kind of an instant gratification when it comes to warmth).

The Pre-EPA Defiant works in the same way as the Vigilant, so I suspect it feels the same except on a grander scale.

The New Defiants have firebrick and whatnot, so I wonder if that softens the blow in any way. Also, the Newer Defiants have a smaller firebox than the Old Defiant. The Vigilant has about a 2.5 cu ft firebox and I know the Pre-EPA defiant was much larger. Meanwhile the New Defiant has a 3.1 cu ft firebox which probably puts it in between the two older stoves.

I am interested in getting the Encore going that I picked up in July. In theory it should feel pretty close to the Vigilant. In theory.

Also, there are two posters here that swapped out their Vigilant for large EPA stoves this summer. One is Remkel (SP?), who purchased an F600. The other poster escapes me at the moment and I forgot what they purchased. I want to say it was a Fireview. But I am not sure. I hope they chime in on this thread as I am very interested in the direct comparisons.
