Question on installing a damper (location)

It looks like my draft is just too strong now that it has gotten cold and I need to install a damper. It would seem I would want to install it below my probe thermometer so the thermometer will still be accurate with what is going up the flue. Correct?

If so, how far from the 90 coming out the back of the stove does the damper need to be?

Any tips you want to share on getting it installed correctly?
