stove smokes when lit, big time!! (any ideas)

I've always heard of people taking newspaper, and either in the flue, or the chinney lighting it and starting draft. My thoughts on that are couldn't it trigger a chimney fire? Im just curious. I know why it starts draft, but is it safe?

Cheap solution.

Insert this in the stove, leave the door ajar, and it will create enough heat to get things moving. Remove it, then build your fire.

I had the same problem and also used a ceramic heater to preheat the chimney. I also had down draft problems during 30+ MPH winds. I installed a draft inducer last month and it resolved both problems. It works great!
