5 pieces of this wood in NJ. I split one. It was a bear. Any help Identifying is appreciated.

It looks like cottonwood to me too. If its cottonwood you should see a star-shaped image at the center of any cross section - there's some native lore about the star. Cottonwood is heavy when green, hand splits poorly and has low heat value. That said, it is good to have some around in smaller or thinner pieces since it ignites easily and is great for starting or restarting a fire.
