Just a guess cause we dont have them here but the leaves in the area look like poplar/aspen

1) looks like a tulip poplar

2) looks like maple to me.

Actually Fbelec has the right idea . . . scratch and sniff is a great way of identifying some species . . . or at least seeing if it is a softwood vs. hardwood.
