Going down to 7°F tonight- that's a remarkable low for long island!

I think we’re forecast for 2F tonight, which is nothing remarkable here, but definitely below our average. The real kicker with this one is the wind chill, I think it’ll be -8F with that.

I could Use a second damper tonight I think. It's honking here in md. Low of 10 which is cold- but terrible with 20-40mph winds.

I have severe heat loss on nights like this. Couple location (hill surrounded by fields) with piss poor air sealing and you get my house. Shut my fan off to reload for 30 min and I litetally Could feel the house cooling off.

Any gain in turning the cat around? The front of it does take a beating. Anybody ever done this?

This is cold windchills for sure -34F here too. Stove running hard and the furnace intermittently helping to equalize the house temperature

I don't think the tabs will let you do it.

Snip them off and make a few out of SS sheet metal for the other side. Just wondering if anybody has done it. I know the front surface can be glowing but deeper in not so a thermal gradient is present across the depth of the cat so I suspect the front surface wears out before the back surface. I wonder if BK has tried this. Alternating cat positions seasonally might improve performance with respect to smoke clearing time at startup. I don't expect to increase the overall lifespan, just improve operation. No substitute for a proper washing either.

Doh, I think it is behind the treeline here. Briefly considered going up on the roof, but laziness won... plus I don't have any pants on and it's 20 degrees...

In and out of cloud cover but got a couple good views, 11:28 and its just a sliver but temp dropped in the last 1/2 hour. Better put on some pants.

Got a good look at the Blood Wolf Bark at the Moon but it was windy and cold so didn't stick around. Windy today too, nasty day.

Loaded both stoves last evening. Held 72F and 73F on the two halves of my first floor right thru bedtime last night. This morning awoke to 69F and 70F, respectively, with half a load left in both stoves. No boiler action on the first floor, it was just the stoves.

Outside temp was 2F with -10F windchill. My BK’s are keeping the place warmer at 2F, than the Jotuls did at 20F!

Stuffed a fresh half load on top of what was left into the stove where it was 69F, and just left the other one rolling. Should be good for tonight. Pretty darn good, considering the construction and sq.ft. I’m heating.

Anyone else doing any cap checking today? I get a little paranoid in this kind of weather.

Not to add to you guys swelled heads but started a late load around 11 while temp was still about 19. The boiler started picking up the slack sometime around 4:00-4:30 so about 5 hrs before it wasn't keeping up. Temps got down to 12 or so with strong wind. Definitely not BK run time but that's ok in this case since I need everything to cycle.

Are you referring to ice build up on the cap?

I've only gotten ice once or twice mostly when running in snowy conditions. Since I got dry wood religion and learned to keep the air up I've been in good shape but in this weather I worry my normal burn methods won't be good enough to keep the cap from fouling. My cap design is not prone to it but we only get to these real low temps occasionally.

it hasn't been above minus 30*C here for four and half days now. windchills in the minus 40*Cs. some relief in sight over the next few days, then cold again. been running the birch through the stove to see how it compares to the jack pine. loads are lasting a bit longer on a medium setting but i haven't noticed a dramatic difference. the instant hot heat of the jack pine is hard to beat.
