Pic taken with cat removed, yes I have new gasket

Ok. So there’s perforated sheet Then cat. Then this flat piece of steel hanging on two tabs. There’s a piece dangling in front of the flat steel. Cat thermometer probe? It’s preventing that piece of steel from moving so I can get behind to vacuum
Smoke baffle?

Yeah, it's a baffle, and it's normal. I have always assumed it was about keeping flue temps down at the collar, with 1000F exhaust blasting off the back of the cat. Flame shield is the perf piece in front of the cat, as you had already assumed.

Is that the cat temp probe to left of center of the probe?

Welded in place. That must make it harder to clean. I’m back up. This clean out was promoted bc I noticed the mesh on my cap getting clogged. About 3 months pretty much 24/7 burning. It’s heating my house so that’s a win!

If you keep that screen on your cap, you can expect to be cleaning it again. I removed mine and trashed it. A plugged bird screen could force a shut down in the middle of winter!

Why does the princess insert look so much better than the freestander?

If you're referring to images above, it's an enamel Ashford 25 insert.

Online manual the flame shield has sides, and stainless bypass retainers, mine has flat flame shield, and no retainers. I know I have the original papers somewhere. I split and stacked a half cord of oak today. Don’t feel like looking, hence, I ask you fellas.

So is online manual outdated, or is my bk missing the stainless retainer pieces, and they decided to eliminate the side pieces to the flame shield?

ashford inserts are pretty rare. The bypass retainers are smashed between the cat and the cat hole so you will never see them unless you remove the cat. The flame shield has the round holes in it. Mine has little sides welded to it that don’t really do anything.

Rare? We sell vastly more of them than Princess inserts. Perhaps you meant here on hearth.com

yep, which explains the crickets he’s hearing. The ashford insert sure looks sharp.

do you have any input on his question?

The flame shield was 3 welded pieces....now it's a single piece.

Retainers fit on each side of the combustor and you really can't see them without removing the combustor.

Y'all are downright puzzling with all the foofah about this stove is pretty and that one isn't.

It's a stove! Pick the one that is best at making the house warm. :)
Unfortunately I have to look at the stove in the summer as well. A black box is not very appealing when it doesn't have a fire in it. Not that most BK owners know what that looks like anyway ;lol :p I'm just kidding!

But you can pick many that look good and heat your house

Mines pretty and heats the house. No complaining. I just want to keep it maintained. This warm stretch on the east coast was a good time to clean chimney with soot eater. I saw some discrepancies with manual, mainly with the probe dangling and no retainers. I’m sure it’s cheaper to make a flat flame shield vs one with two small pieces welded to the sides. Nobody addressed the probe. What’s the proper way to move that out of the way to get to the “baffle” To clean it?
I’m guessing the majority of folks buying a brown enameled fireplace insert aren’t also thinking about getting wood stacked for 3 years from now. Without removing that baffle there’s no way to clean out the space between the cat and the exhaust outlet. Again, I’m happy with this stove, it’s heating my 2000 sqft house vs using gas.
