15 more bags to go

15 more bags and I'll be up to 5 tons this winter. Not complaining though. No oil used and at the beginning of the winter I told my wife that I expected to burn about that amount. Hopefully next winter will be a little milder and I'll stay closer to 4 tons.

I have one more bag left from my original 3 tons. I started to burn on Nov. the 7th. So with the temps here just north of the Mohawk River and just south of the Adirondack Mountains in NY, I think I did pretty good . My house is 1200 sq ft and well insulated and with 4 new thermal pane windows and 14 more to replace I was able to keep the house at around 68° - 70°. All the stores around me have little or no pellets. The ones who do have them regulate the number you can buy to 10 and are charging $6.50 per bag for pellets that sold for $4.50 at the beginning of the season. My wife and I decide to get 100 gallons of oil to finish out this season,which I hope is just a few more weeks. I said to her why buy inferior pellets that I have to burn twice as many to get the same amount of heat from for just a few weeks. Next winter I plan on stocking 4 tons just to be safe.

Even at double the price, pellets are still a bargain over oil.

Yes they are but I refuse to buy Greene Supreme Pellets. They are the worst pellets that I have ever burned in the 10 years of doing so. Not going to do it. Oil being delivered tomorrow for $3.59 a gallon. So 100 gallons at $359. It is more logical right now then $65.00 for 10 bags that will only last me 5 days , burning 2 bags a day just to keep the house close to 68°.

Are Green Supreme pellets really that bad? I was running low and the only place that had any pellets this weekend was Home Depot. I picked up 16 bags of Green Supreme. I haven't started burning them yet though. I only paid 4.68 a bag.

Different people will give you different answers. Some love 'em, some hate 'em.

The Green Supremes I burned last winter were very clean (no fines at all) and they burned well (not much ash) but I did not get as much heat from them as with any other pellet that I've burned (FSU, Barefoot, Starlite, Somerset and yes......even Infernos!). I have a thermometer on the front of the stove....not the most scientific way to measure heat ..... but the GS pellets provided (20 percent?) less heat.

Were you raised in a barn? Do you leave the door open all winter? Nine tons? That is crazy, but imagine heating that many BTU's with oil... ouch.

My neighbor has burned up 8 tons in a 1100 sq ft reasonably well insulated house this year. She can't quite get the connection between 90 degree temps and 8 tons. She thinks she is saving the igniter because she can't afford a new one and the electric to run it cost to much. I tell her she could easily buy an igniter and all the electric needed for a year with one ton of the pellets and the other ton she would save would be money in her pocket. She doesn't listen. Like the saying goes, "You can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink."

Are Green Supreme pellets really that bad?

It definitely changes year to year. I burned 5 ton of GS last season with zero issues. I burned mostly Fireside Ultras this season but was forced to pick up one ton of GS to get through the season. The ton I got had a ton of saw dust (i.e. fines) in every bag. Compared to the Green Supreme, the Fireside Utras I bought had almost no fines at all. Having said that, I can't really say there have been any other differences. My house stays just as warm, regardless of the name on the bag.
