Hi Everyone -

I've got a 15' tall chimney (from hearth to top of chimney brick). This is a straight measurement and does not include any extra length for the bend. It is a an exterior chimney. I'm going t be installing a Regency I1100 in it.

Am I safe ordering a 15' length insert? I'm figuring since the top of insert is 20" off the hearth, I've got an extra 20" of "wiggle room" to make up for any length that is lost in the bend.

If it makes any difference, I'm installing this into a 1974 heatilator-style fireplace where I am going to cut out the middle heatilator tube.

Thoughts?

15' should be fine make sure you get insulation with it also. And get some sheet metal for a block off plate as well.

Thanks - I was planning on getting a pre-insulated liner to make things faster, easier and to ensure I can get down my narrow chimney without the liner wrap mesh catching on rough spots.

What size clay liner is it? Pre insulated works well but it usually is not smaller than a wrapped liner.

Actually, I'm not sure. The place is 3 hours from my home and I need to get up there again to do some further inspection. This may be a rookie question, but do all chimneys have clay liners in them? There isn't a clay pipe coming out of the top of the chimney. BTW - I'm in California.

Well you need to know that before you order anything to make sure it is going to fit.

No they do not all have them but those that dont are usually very old. Yours being built with a metal firebox it would be very unlikely that it would be unlined.

OK - thanks. I'll take the insert up, get started on the cutting and be sure to check.
