2+ bags per day --- when will it end ?

Can't wait for these cold snaps to take a hike, it's killing my pellet stash !

Down to 1 ton now, looks like I'll be doing the pellet hunt next week to replenish the stock in the basement.

-19C tonight and Friday's nighttime temp is predicted to be -23C, roll on next week, looks like there might be warmer weather on the way, just hope the snow stays away too.

How's everyone else doing pellet stash wise ?

Sounds like temps to go above normal after tommorow. Still need some better snow though. Don't like going into spring with a major ground moisture deficit. We had the same thing a few years ago and had major snow then rain and flooding the first week of April.

Woody you may not be so happy if the cold + no snow = frozen water pipes in the ground outside. I remember a winter not too many years back when it was very cold and no snow, which resulted in the frost line freezing the ground 6 feet and freezing water mains in the towns/cities here in upstate NY south of Albany.

Yah, NH cities have had several water main breaks, probably because we don't have much snow to insulate the ground. Plus, it is nice to be able to pile snow around the foundation for added insulation. On the other hand, I'm glad not to be shoveling snow in all my "spare" time like I did last year.

I am at about 2 ton burned in Southern In. Been keeping the house very warm with the stove this year. I just returned all my stash to the local farm store, it was Easy Heats and they were burning like crap, I really think they were year old and gotten damp. I am switching to Somersets, need to go get a couple pallets this week

Snowless here in eastern Mass as well but except for a few nights, it's nowhere near as cold this winter as it was last winter. Lots of broken pipe stories around here though and plumbers are out straight.

Pellet use still about 5% less than last year here in eastern PA, but last year was awful. I hate snow, and prefer cold enough weather to freeze the ground on the surface and keep it there until a lasting shift to warm temps. But that's because thawed ground but no growing grass here equals a house full of mud tracked in by dogs...

Just another reason that I over bought this season. I still have four full tons of the 7 I bought, and probably half of another ton. Last year at this time, I was chasing after pellets, and most stores didn't have them to sell to me.

I quit ice fishing a couple of decades ago. Too many springs in these ponds around here and other than last winter we really don't get a good hard lasting freeze going. Plus I don't like the cold. Last time I went there was maybe 5" of ice on this small trout pond, the day warmed up so now a coat of slush on top. I picked up my traps and left. Next morning the ice was gone, it warmed up more overnight and rained all night.. Give me a ft of hard ice making more ice. But then I don't like teh cold, so the heck with it. I'll tie flies and go in open water fly fishing. Be that full sink line or later on top water.

I used to think that here ( 3") but at 3" in many ponds here you will see open water areas and that's a spring. One pond, really I call it a lake, could be open in the middle with 6". That is a good time to note where the springs are at. And from boat fishing I know that open spot is on the edge of a ledge so if you can get to it ice fishing it's probably going to be good. They get big Brown Trout out of that "lake" but I never dared go way out to that ledge so got stuck with huge pickerel in the shallows. There are better safer trout ponds around IMO. Funny, off one beach area in winter if the water opens up you can get those same Browns in waders with full sink line and big brown or black Woolie Buggers. Not through the ice though.

If we get a ft of ice we are pretty safe anywhere on the pond. 5-6" was good enough for me, just be aware.

6 bags short of 2 1/2 tons burned since sept. 22nd.

i'm hoping to burn less than the 5 1/2 i burned last year. (which was a ton more than the year before that)
i'm not as concerned about these cold days as i am about needing to still be burning some in june again like last year.
