The Indians used to use birch bark for headaches.

"The glycosides found in Birch Bark break down into methyl salicylate, an active component in aspirin, making this herbal remedy a natural replacement for the pain-relieving and blood-thinning effects of aspirin. When used in a topical solution applied to the skin, Birch Bark eases the pain from bruises, burns and minor wounds. The tannin component in Birch Bark is helpful in treating stomach and intestinal problems such as diarrhea and dysentery. *"
