Thanks Jay! I never had ash before. I thought it was but the driver was not sure.

Top right looks like silver maple left bottom is what us northerners call red pine......... yeah pretty sure. Smokin's nailed the other two

1 looks alot like linden / tulip tree / yellow poplar that I have in the front yard

I believe that the 1st one is Mulberry; look at the yellow cutside with a little white sap oozing out. It will turn reddish-brown if I'm right-give it a little time.

I can't see the yellow on my screen , the bark looks a bit more furrowed than the one I was cutting a couple days ago I will have to go take a better look in the daylight.
Just so happens Lucky Phil posted a pic of the muberry he has and looks just like the stuff I have .

I'm with Lee on 2 - 4. I would venture a guess that #1 is cottonwood. I definately don't see any ash there.
The second picture is Red Maple, the third seems to be two different types of pine - I think one is Scotch Pine, the log on the left looks like REd Pine or Pitch Pine (not the same trees, just look the same)
#1 might be sweet gum. Give it a whack with a maul and you'll find out quick. Watch your head when it bounces back atcha!
If it aint gum it could be cottonwood or even ginko. We have a HUGGGEEE ginko trunk that sorta resembles that.

I've never split or burned pine and today I tackled the pine. It's about as fun as making bluefish chum with a wood-chipper. Every hit with the maul produced a wicked spray of sap. It was also really tough splitting. I gave up on the maul and rolled out the little splitter and it made that cry too but got it done. All I have left is a few rounds of that big red pine and then I can move on to the hard wood.
I think this was ID'd as Silver Maple. Is it normally hard to split? This one was a twisted wavy nightmare! Could hardly see a grain on it, it was like it was poured in the bark lol
