what's this stuff for? it burns away so fast, even on pellets, that it never gets anything started.

Back when I sold the stuff that was the main purpose of it.
Looks like most reviewers use it for that also...

There are now alcohol fueled stoves and fireplaces. Mostly for ambience. Not much heat.

Sterno stoves! When we were kids we used to love to put our hands through the burning sterno fires.....proof positive of the low temps of those fires!

Some of the alcohol units use mirrors as well as other tricks to look fairly decent.
