All the black locust I want!

My neighbor who owns the property that I cut wood on showed me an area with what looks to be several hundred black locust trees.
He wants them gone, and I will be happy make that happen.
I just got back from my first trip to the black locust "grove". Got a couple of cords cut up and I'll go and load it up next week.
Looking forward to some hot fires down the road.

Sounds Great !

I have a little experience with this species and advise considering de-barking it on site if possible. This stuff is rot-resistant so you could drop them and come back later when the bark will easily fall of. I am even considering just cutting the outer inch or two on some to make me some standing dead for next year.

Max, that is quite an undertaking for sure. To buck up several hundred trees is a lot of work that can take a lot of time too. Good luck.

He is not in any rush to get them removed.
He heats with wood as well, and I provide all he needs in exchange for the privelige of cutting wood for myself.
He is busy with his ranch and cattle, so it works out great for both of us!

If you're not real far ahead, I would start with any stuff that's on the ground or standing dead. I've found grounders with no bark that were already sub-20 moisture.

Not worried about drying time.
I've got at least 5 years of wood split and stacked now.
But you can never have too much!!

Sounds like you have a lifetime supply there as they will never be 'gone'. Soon as you cut new sprouts will come up or seeds will take. That is unless he takes drastic measures, either chemical or mechanical. Get it on a rotation and you can cut there till the end of time.

He had a guy with a bobcat w/a tree lopper, and some kind of sprayer behind come through and do another area.
I guess it's too early to determine the success or failure of the operation.

I know that these trees grow like weeds, and that is exactly what lots of folks around here consider them to be... Not me though!

Funny how one persons tree weeds are another persons treasure.
I have a yellow locust patch but the black is a tad better, great neighbor you got there.
You get it bone dry in time and she'll blue flame dance for you in a stove !

I love my black locust so I understand completely, all the black locusts I've ever seen are pretty big so I have a question...do you have a job? I mean how do you find the time to cut down several hundred of these trees..... I'm assuming you do this as a hobby?

Of course I have a job. In fact that is where I am now.
As I said before, my neighbor is in no hurry to remove the trees. I figure that I can cut 20-30 per weekend on average, and when he finally decides to doze the rest over, we will have a lot of great firewood for a long time to come!
Like many others here, I'm just a guy having fun and saving myself some cash on the heating bill!
