I've been keeping the coals going the past couple days and the top of the stove between 350-500F. I add a piece once or twice a day next to a piece that's about half coals and put another piece toward the back of the stove for later (preheating/drying more than anything). When I add a piece to the back I usually let light flames kick up for about 20 minutes or so then gradually bring it back down.

Is this an ok way to burn?

Might be ok for mild shoulder season burning as long as the cat stays active.
