Always great service from Woodstock - new cat

So I was issues with my bypass door and ordered a new one. Went to install it and noticed my cat wasn't looking so good. Called Woodstock and they sent me a new one for only the shipping cost. While waiting for it to come in noticed that the bypass door was giving me more issues. Figured I would just wait for the new cat and then open the stove back up to do the door and cat change out. Well you can see by the pic the door was actually broken and the cat just crumbled up when I took it out.

All good though as the door was easy to replace as well as the cat.

All through this I was emailing back and forth to Woodstock asking questions on why the cat went bad ,etc.they always responded with detailed info.

In the end I think I messed up the bypass door by letting the pipe temp get way to high before engaging cat. Now I have engaged cat when the pipe temp hits 300. The new cat is glowing nicely and I am back up to steady 600 stove top temps.

The cat they say was the ceramic kind which they said phosphate from the wood damages it. That's why it's now stainless steel

So now the door is sealing tight , cat is working great and the main thing is they back what they sell and support it to the max. Would always recommend Woodstock for their service and product as this isn't the first time I needed them

That pile looks very familiar. I seen this many times with my old dutchwest wood stove. If Woodstock would have had a stove that would have heated 2400 sqft at the time I was looking I would have probably went with them. I have NEVER heard anything bad about them. Glad your stove is working as it should again. You need all the heat you can get. It can get mighty cold in these WV hills

Is the new cat ceramic or stainless?

Single wall pipe and was getting it up to 500 to 600 - way to high I now understand
The old cat was ceramic and the new one was ss

That's the temp on the stove pipe thermometer not the stove top one .
They sent me a sheet on operation that either I never saw before or forgot what it said. I can post it of you want or you can ask them for it. Better yet I would call and ask your question specifically . That way you don't get any mixed up message and get it straight from them

How old was your cat? Just wondering that Woodstock sent you a new one for free. I'm still amazed that someone ALWAYS answers the phone when you call. And I'm not the only one that bought a stove from them! Glad I bought a stove from them.

I can't open that file either. Have noticed that with a few files lately.

Do remember that 500 to 600 on the surface thermometer single wall pipe convert to internal temps of 1000-1200. Hotter than you want by a long shot, and tons of heat going up the chimney and heating the great outdoors.

So Woodstock gave you a replacement cat for free after, 3 years of use... Very nice! Just can't beat those good folks at Woodstock.

I called WS, didn't catch the name of who I spoke to (Brandon maybe?). He recomended 250-300F single wall pipe suface temp before engaging cat, but suggested 250F STT was a better guide than the pipe thermometer. I told him, due to the huge lag time on the STT, and the fact that I usually do 12 hr reloads (STT down to ~175F), I maintain around 400-500F on the pipe before closing the bypass. He said it would not hurt the cat, just flushes a lot of heat up the chimney. I asked about the occasional 625F pipe temp, he said the cat is fine with those temps, just waisting more heat.

So if you have a pipe surface temp of 400-500 ,, are internal flue gas temps 800-1000? I engage my cat once my internal flue gases are at 500.. I read one post saying surface temps were half of what an internal temp would be..

Yeah, pipe surface temp should be about half the flue gas temp. I did some reloads over the last couple of days and engaged at 300F pipe surface. The cat lit right off. Maybe I've been waisting BTU's trying to get a little extra char on not fully seasoned wood. Livin' and learnin'.

I've been learning with my Fireview as well , finding out that I've been charring my wood longer then needed on a reload.. 3-4 minutes and I can close the by pass with a steady reading of 500-550 on the flue gases . Cat's been working fine!
