I stopped by an ACE hardware in St. Louis, $18 for a shopping cart of split firewood (approx 18-20 splits). $4 a bundle (5 splits). $120 a pallet. No definition of what quantity that is. $50 for delivery and stacking.

The local mulch/compost yard wants $40 a pickup truck load. That doesn't seem too out of line for split wood, if I get 1/3 cord in the bed, loaded with a skid loader (ahem Bobcat, but I can't say that).

Actually it isn't that difficult - I did it in 7th grade science class - distillation of wood experiment, heat some wood in a test tube, get wood gas and ugly liquid stuff....

Actually the teacher told us it was a combination of creosote, water and wood alcohols.... I don't doubt him.
