Perfect Michigan morning to cut. A little muddy, but this new ranger makes it so much easier!

It was a beautiful day in Wisconsin for some work in the woods too. My favorite toy got a little workout pulling out some standing dead oak logs.

Gotta love dry dead ash. That's all I've scrounged this winter which is fine with me. Most will be ready to burn next year, but I won't actually get to it for probably 2 or 3 years.

I couldn’t agree more. Most of the ash trees I run into (not very many, it’s pretty much oak/maple here) are still alive, for now. Dead standing elm is the ill-prepared man’s firewood of choice around here but I love finding some nice air-dried ash when I’m in the woods.

Don’t mean to be. But I will say that the backhoe attachment I got with adjustable thumb has to be the best $2k I’ve ever spent on equipment. I got it to dig the underground lines for my OWB because renting a mini excavator was over half of that for 1 weekend. Now I can’t seem to stop finding new ways to use it. I can grip a 36” x 8’ log and put it anywhere I want it. Digs about a 6’ deep trench. I actually find this a lot more useful in firewood gathering than a grapple because I can sneak in between trees to pick logs out of the woods with a lot more finesse.
