Since I hit the one ton point, decided I should see how much ash I'm getting. Snowed yesterday, top of the driveway was a little slippery. Dumped the ash pan into the bucket so I could be totally accurate. Weighed the ash bucket, which contains all the ashes since I started burning, strewed the ashes in the driveway, weighed the empty bucket. 13 lb. of ash from 1 ton of pellets, half Energex, half Pennington. I make it to be .65%. Energex bags say less than 1% ash, Pennington just says "low ash". Just thought it was interesting.

Yes very interesting!

When I first read 13 Lbs of ash I thought, holy cow that a lot of ash. After reading your calculation to .65 percent of pellets burned, that sounds pretty good to me. Thanks for sharing the info.!

Hoss, are you sure on that number? When I divide 13 by 2000, I get .0065....that's REALLY a small percentage. If so, then you have some super duper, maxi ultra , double premium pellets there.

NICE!

And, if you divide 1 by 100, you get .01 = 1%, therefore .0065 = .65%

Penningtons claim to be "Premium" and a PFI Premium pellet has to be less than 1% ash (Standard is up to 3%). You're doing it the right way - calculating by weight. Most people who seem to get upset about the amount of ash produced appear to be looking at the volume of ash produced. The volume of ash is extremely variable but at the end of the day, it's how much wood product that was burned which counts and BTUs are calculated by the pound.

Please remember some went out the exhaust.

Yeah, I thought of that, and some blew away every time I dumped the pan into the bucket. Hey, I ain't a rocket scientist. Close enough for me, I was just curious.

Plus, I guess some got trapped in the hepa filter on the Ridgid vac. BUT, that's probably real light stuff that wouldn't weigh much anyway.

Wow, you thought of everything. I guess we can now officially dub you the ash doctor %-P
