Finally some good pictures of one of these beasts, the Big Box stores up here don't sell them so I've never seen one.
What is the square piece just inside the door at the bottom?

the steel "periscope" sticking up is an air inlet it "squirts " a shot of air at the bottom of the fire, helps with the primary combustion
