I wouldn;'t modify anything to be safe. Anyway there is nothing wrong with quality of these boilers , as some previous comments stated. Parts are available and customer service seems great. Only issue is refractory wear.

I've heard of people making sacrificial nozzle covers out of firebrick, and even heavy plate... SS would probably last quite a while.

I tried that with 5/8 steel when my nozzle was bad
It was a decent temporary fix

I like the sloped refractory to keep fuel over the nozzle . May make something like that on my econoburn
You could add some bars at an angle to see if it would make a difference
i get a lot of loads burn out the center, probably because the spruce i burn has to be bigger than the hardwoods it was built for.

Update on Mbtek from an insider. They appear to be minutes away from bankruptcy.

New posting from an emploee.
"MBtek has now eliminated its entire engineering and technical support staff, has no means to restock inventory, and is carrying hundreds of thousands of dollars in chargebacks. Do not waste your time requesting a refund directly from them. If you have an open order, act now — contact your bank and file a chargeback through your credit card provider immediately. If that window has passed, your best option is to have a lawyer send a formal demand letter, which will give your claim more weight as the company moves toward what appears to be unavoidable bankruptcy.

We acknowledge that we are disgruntled employees, but we also feel a responsibility to warn others about what is happening. This information is accurate, and we would not want anyone else to lose their money."

Just an update the Autonom boiler is working flawlessly all winter, but the refractory is not looking too robust though:(
