Looks like a nice big soft maple. This one looks like Silver to me. Beech will have lighter wood like that but more of a smooth bark.
 
That is what confused me. The newer growth is very smooth gray bark. It splits like a dream

Usually younger growth on soft maples will be smooth except for the trunk wood.
Beech will basically be smooth from stump to crown. Sometimes bumpy.

What's with the bark in your last post ? I took a close up look at the bark. Your comments of beech implies smooth bark.

Could this be Black Birch ? What does it smell like ?

Not beech. Maple is a good guess.
