Free 30 ton log splitter and all the wood i can take???? Great day!! Friend at work has been promising me the splitter for weeks, and here I thought he was pulling my leg. The last picture is what is left of his pile, Im gonna need a bigger truck! (seems to be about 2-3 cords of all presplit stuff)

Yea some of it is sycamore (that ones easy), hows that burn? As for the splitter, he inherited it from his brother "broken" and all he had to do to get it running was replace the idle spring. I offered money and he would not take it, but his wife did say she did not want the wood or the splitter on her property :D

I don't think the wood is elm. I'd say cottonwood is more likely. I don't cut much cottonwood so I haven't looked closely at the bark, but the bark seems rather cottonwoody to me and the white wood does too. Elm wood is darker colored.

Man this thing is splitting through my 18" rounds of green pin oak like butter and its super quiet, guess the fiskars will be shelved for a while.

Why am I reminded of Penthouse letters?

I never thought things like this would happen to me, but the other day I was sitting at home minding my own business when I received a call out of the blue. It was a call about a two-fer . . . not only did I have the chance to get wood, but I had a chance to get a free splitter. I have heard stories of this sort of thing happening to other people and it sounded like just wild stories . . . never in my wildest fantasies could I picture this happening to me. When I got there I cannot tell you how much wood I had . . . I had a huge amount of wood . . . and while I was hoping for a nice piece of ash, I still had plenty of other great choices. After a long, hot bout that involved some heavy sweating and working with my wood I left with a smile on my face and a spring in my step . . . well actually after that work out I was a bit sore (hehheh). . . but hey, you won't hear me complaining.

You guys are funny...reminds me of how I lost my snowblower. I gave it to my boyfriend's son because it would only go in reverse(not the most useful gear on a snowblower). It was a simple fix for a kid who worked on a NASCAR pit crew. Apparently it was a broken gear sprocket.
He got a "free" snowblower and I learned a lesson on giving things away because they are broken.
Now I pay a mechanic to fix things.
Oh...and I bought my splitter new over a 1 year period at 30% interest.

Hey I noticed in some of the splits of elm this weird knotting (IDK what else to call it) anyone know what this is from or what it is? Or if you guys still think its elm XD

It's probably scars from a woodpecker/sapsucker.
The tree grew over them.

And I really think you have sweetgum not elm

Might be how hard is elm to split green? Reading around this stuff matchs gum alot, super hard to split even with the 30ton press and it tore more than split (but elm is tought to split too)....... either way they have the same BTU output and wont be ready till next year

The way the vertical piece(pic #3) has the zig-zag grain is exactly what every piece of gum I've split looks like.
Unless you are shearing off a piece on the edge and then it'll pop off on a clean growth ring.
