What do you guys think about stuffing insulation around the liner? How safe is it? Should i just fab a block off plate or does insulation work just as well?

I would go for the block off plate. You will never give it a second thought, only a feeling of a job well done!

I've had just insulation for 4 years with no problems. It's not visible, so the ugly look isn't an issue. However, if there were ever a fire in the liner, I'd feel a lot better with a solid plate in addition to the insulation.

x2 on the block-off plate. Increase your safety and decrease your wood consumption.

If you are going to something. Do it right.

Thats how I feel about it but I had a stove guy tell me to just pack insulation up there and be done with it. Started to make me think twice.

Your stove guy may be a bit of a hack! No insult, just an observation.

When it comes to anything fire related, I will always do it the best way possible.

Safety first!

Fiberglass insulation is not allowed around wood liners. Its melting point is below the rated temps for the liner system in the event of a chimney fire.

What about rock wool?(Sound ire blanket). I ask because I have a few batts left over from a project and this looks like a good place to put them.

Thanks,
Anthony

Rock wool should be fire / melt proof. That is pretty much wat the material used to insulated the liners is. That is safe to put around the liner.

most rock wool won't cause a problem, but it isn't likely spec'd to what liner insulation is. Most rockwool you get wasn't intended for heat exposure all the time, but to create a firebreak during the one time it gets exposed to a fire. I have it around my flue as a block off plate for now until I get off my butt and make my block off plate, and when I did some work this summer noticed some discoloration from the heat, but it is't going to start a fire or something IMHO.

I made my block off "plate" out of this stuff. Works awesome, I used the 1" thick stuff. Insulates as well.
