Bonehead Alert!

Yes I am the bonehead. I was watching a movie and remembered that that stove needed more wood. So I ran down stairs and loaded the stove full with the damper wide open and went back to the movie. By the time I remembered to go back down stairs and close the air, the thermometer that is on the stove pipe was reading like 800 degrees and the top of the stove was glowing. I shut the air right off and eventually the stove went back down to safe operating temperatures. So my question is what did I just do to my regency stove? Obviously I got it to hot. Should I be concerned about anything now that this has happened?

Welcome to the club Steveo - More than likely the top of the stove has a little crown in it like my F2400 does. You may have also popped a few welds for the side shields as the stove was expanding. Not sure if you would have done anything internal, but it's possible the back of the stove may have warped too. Next time you go to reload check to make sure the baffle is sitting correctly flat against the back and sides of the stove.

When I did it they told me to be on the lookout for a change in how my insert operated- like it if tends to burn faster there may be a popped seam where a weld failed.Sometimes firebricks can crack. I guess it depends on the structure of your stove and others will better address that.
I just wanted to say been there, done that.
I know I am mentioning it when I get my annual service done so they can inspect things extra closely.

I think we have all done something like that, I know I have. It is so easy to walk away
and get distracted with the stove door cracked open or the air fully open.

Here is the soulution I have come up with. I put together a temp monitor/alarm for my stove.

I actually have two on my stove, one for flue temp and one for stove top temp.
They will indicate the temprature and sound an alarm if the temp goes above the set point. I burn a lot of pallets which can over fire if you are not careful. The monitor /alarm will let you know if things are getting too hot.

What?! I keep seeing this over and over on this forum. Everyone does not necessarily do it once. At least in over 50 years we have yet to do it and plan on keeping it that way.

Yep - me neither, have not done that one. If I have one loaded up like that and am going to watch a movie, I just set the timer in my kitchen or on my cell phone. Have 3 alarm clocks in my house, one timer on the stove and one on the microwave, a timer on the cell phone and folks to remind me if need be - - - why don't folks use timers??

ive dont that chit way more than once it will balloon your eyes right out and warm up the house nicely. wess99 i would love to get one of those alarms did you buy it all put together.

I did it a couple of weeks ago. My insert got up to 900* but nothing was glowing and all looks and acts fine within but will have sweep check it when he cleans my chimney next. (Due to that burn I can easily extend the time between sweeps. Sure it burned everything right off of that pipe!)

As someone pointed out to me: Use a timer when leaving the room. ( I knew that but ignored it thinking I would be right back in....)

Wouldnt the cat be easier to run? I just set the thermo and dont usually worry about it, I dont think I could overfire my stove unless I tried like hell.

Last year I didn't do it once (first year burning). This year, I've already done it twice!! Load the stove in the basement, run upstairs to tend to the little one, and didn't get back downstairs in a timely manner to adjust the air Gone down to find a part in the back of the stove the size of a half dollar glowing red. Shut the air down and the stove temp dropped and the glow went away fairly quickly, and all seems well with it.

But yep -- include me in your bonehead club
