Braggin': Honey Locust

Cut/split/stacked a truck load of honey locust. I hadn't posted in awhile so I thought I better brag a little.

Nice score! I also picked up a few pickup loads of locust that the tree company laid down. I'd just as soon have it as anything. Enjoy

I love honey locust! I grabbed a few big pieces in the fall. Love the waY it cracks when you split it.

What's the difference in black and honey ? We only have black locust in my area.

Name alone IMO. They both are heavy wood with high BTUs. It seems to me that black locust burns longer. Black locust seems to pop more than honey locust. Honey locust smells better when burning and lights easier. Black can sit in your stacks for years and you don't have to worry about rot.

Nice score! I've got some thornless honey locust seeds that are germinating now. Planting for the future. Only thing I've heard negative about honey locust is that the bugs can like them in the stacks. Overall great wood.

I found a couple little tiny (3") black locusts in the woods out back. Still trying to figure out where they came from and if they have any big brothers!

I scored about five to six truck loads of black locust so far this year, best firewood in my opinion. Awesome score great wood to get. I have heard the only difference between honey and black locust is black locust will just about last forever, where honey can rot within a few years and is more susceptible to insects. I personally have not seen much of a difference but I seem to get a lot more black than honey anyways. Regardless both burn hot, last a long time if kept dry, and seem to be only popular among guys that burn wood. For me it is one of the few woods I will go out of my way or work a lot harder to get a good scrounge. If there is more grab it.

I think it might dry a little faster than Oak, but I give any dense wood plenty of time in the stack. Never had any Honeylocust yet, only BL. But there's a dead Honeylocust at my buddy's house that I'll be getting soon. I'll heed heavy hammer's advice and cover it well...

I think it's thorn-less. Decent-sized, maybe 2/3 cord. Will get pics. He's also got a dead Sycamore that needs to come down; Guess I gotta take the good with the bad.

Even better cut split and stack. Not having thorns makes it a lot easier.

Most all up here are the thornless varieties. Ive only run into thorns once. I like burning honey locust.

Well, honey definitely looks entirely different than black locust ! Only thing with thorns like that around here is Hawthorn trees. Thanks for showing a pic.

And I agree , locust is hard to beat second only to hickory in my book for heat. There's a mill close to me that sells bundles of locust slabs for $10 a bundle, I usually get 2-3 bundles a season to mix in with my wood. Great stuff.
