Question:

I've noticed BTU output on some wood stove are at 50,000 BTU an hr.
Now my natural gas furnace has a plate on it that says 160,000 btu's?? .
How are wood burning stoves rated when it comes to BTU's?? Are they all per hour?

Answer:

Yes, all per hour.

A furnace might only turn on for 15 minutes each hour, which means 40,000 BTU input x 75% efficiency - or 30,000 BTU for that particular hour. A stove gives output all the time when it is running, so this is the reason for the difference.
