Was thinking of all the folks that have been discussing generators and power inverters and whatnot for backup power for everything from stove/insert fans to keeping their pellet stove in action during a power outage. It brought back a project I had seen many years ago.

This project is probably suitable for a DIY/ Fiddly type person that is looking for a relatively low power generator. Something of this style coupled with a single battery and properly sized inverter could probably get by for a long time on a small amount of fuel. Or they could go and buy a generator and be done with it.
Anyhow - thought this might interest a few folks that might be looking for a cheap method to run small electrical loads.
ETA - the linked site above does have items for sale for this purpose, but I don't see the need for any specialized items. The engine, pulleys, alternator, etc. can all be sourced or made from various outlets and or stock material. Heck - a base could be made from a 1/2" piece of plywood and strategic bracing (for example).
