Me too. I vacuum the exterior of the stove, if it's unused for more than a month. Still get some burnt smells but much less with a good vac job.If the paint is 8 years old, it's probably not the paint. Are you familiar with the smell of burning dust? Any heater I haven't used in a couple of months is going to smell pretty badly the first couple of times I use it. The longer it has sat unused, the worse it is. Gives me a headache, so I try to do a "dust burn" at the beginning of the season on a warmish breezy day with the windows open.
Ok so I got one of those little inspection camera and tried to go through one of those little holes in bottom of fireplace. It was hard to control but here are some pics of chase. Should there be all that insulation around bottom? Also look like side panels look funny. Could the insulation be giving off fumes?

The blown in insulation may have come from above, or below. If it came from above, there is probably more insulation sitting on top of the fireplace.Ok I guess the big question is it safe to use? It’s been that way for 8 years. Is this what is causing chemical smell? What is that silvery pleated stuff called lining the chase? Would it cause a smell. Thanks for all your help I wonder if whoever put up that silver stuff bunched it around the fire stop? Kind of looks like that stuff is bunched up some
