subject line says it all. i am installing a new stove with an 8" opening. it will be single wall through the shop til it gets to the wall and then, of course, double wall outside. there is a craigslist deal on 8 inch double wall with an 8" outer diameter and 5.5 inch inner diameter. can this be done? is it a not ideal, bad or terrible idea?

The term double-wall is used too loosely. The craigslist pipe may not be class A, it could be older air-cooled pipe. Get the brand and part number from the pipe if in doubt.

No, taking an 8" outlet stove down to 5.5" pipe is not a good plan.
