They might be able to do that even quicker for just cars and trucks but there are whole categories out there they will still need fossil fuels. But cars and trucks are the culprit right now and we need to clean up our air for our health..Good for them...clancey
 
Gotta start somewhere, cars and light pickups are the low hanging fruit. Long haul trucks would be the next logical step.

Farm machinery seems to be the most challenging to convert to electric, some of the newest equipment are powered by 600+hp engines that can easily run at full load for 10-16hrs a day when it's go time. I'm not sure where a battery exists to make that feasible, never mind what rural farms have a large enough grid connection to charge multiples of these machines overnight.

I'm still a little skeptical that enough batteries can be produced to make the switch to electric this fast, I'd happily be proven wrong, but that's quite the undertaking to accomplish.

Maybe one day our neighbors south of the 49th will follow suit, seems to be lots of talk down there but not a whole lot of action.

Many ways to meet the regs for heavy equipment using zero emissions liquid fuels. Most diesels run quite well on 100% biodiesel with the exception of cold weather. Many folks do not understand the concept of renewable credits used for solar and in some cases liquid fuels RINs. Making a gallon of biodiesel in one part of the country to be used in another part by transporting the physical product is impractical. Using credits simplifies things as along as the system is transparent and audited. So in the case of a RIN Renewable Index Numbers for biofuels, someone produces the RIN for gallon of "renewable fuel" and that produces an electronic certificate with a serial number. Then anyone buying liquid fuel will buy the fuel like they do today but the supplier will need to prove that they have bought enough RINs to cover the amount of fuel they sell. Its quite easy to ramp this up by starting out with small percentage of the fuel requiring RINs and then slowly ramping it up. This puts money in the pocket of the producer and prevents having to move the biofuel around the country. The problem with RINs or any other system is it only works if its honest and auditable. There has been numerous scams in the US where people are faking the production of biofuel to generate RINs and then selling them. Its a federal crime in the US but the money is too attractive and prosecutions are rare. Folks rarely go to prison for financial crimes and corporations just get fined as part of doing business. The past administration in the US just wrote a lot of waivers and underfunded the agency plus staffed the EPA and other federal departments with admnstrators that were at best indiferrent to the regs in place or at worse hostile to them. The SREC (Solar Renewable Energy Credt) system has worked far better in that the generation and issuance seems to be far less theft prone.

BTW Biodiesel does have issues with cold weather operation, part of the issue is the source feedstock, different feedstocks yield different pour points. The technology exists today to put in fuel preheaters to deal with cold temps. Green kerosene can be produced through a couple of different processes that have quite low pour points so the technology is out there. It all comes down to its lot cheaper to drill oil out of the ground then it is to make it "green". Change the economics to make dio diesel more expensive than biodiesel and people will buy the biodiesel.

My guess is the government is going to make electric vehicles more economically attractive and manufacturers will build the products if there is demand. Biofuels will still be available for applications where its impractical but it will cost more.

It's really amazing how fast the change away from fossil fuels is happening. For decades the oil majors told us it couldn't be done, but somehow they are managing now.
 
well here south of the 49th the EPA has mucked up the diesels- can't use Bio in them as the required junk isn't capable of dealing with it. I do not hear much about the huge AG rigs other than the tier 4 electronics are a pia and when they go south even the dealers are having problems trying to fix them coupled with the proprietary no share software mindset of some MFG's. if that $1/4 or more Million $ rig isn't out in the field producing it is not worth jack squat and that goes for all AG equipment size not withstanding.
 
All the ways we’re destroying the planet and they go after relatively clean burning cars and light trucks. All for solar, and electric vehicles if you can explain how to handle the massive pollution and mining destruction that batteries require. We look the other way and let China produce them and pollute like mad.
How about banning cruise ships. And limit imports as they are shipped. Big ships are massive polluters, look at the numbers. Yet China is not held to our standards, they pollute massively during manufacturing and then during shipping.
Want to save the planet? Don’t allow any imports from countries that don’t have the same limits on pollution as we do. Not to mention low paid/slave workers.
But we want stuff cheap, so we look the other way. And certain political driven ideologies use our sense of decency to divide us and destroy our economy.
The rich/powerful aren’t giving up their jets, big cars or mansions, or AC. But you will.

Decades of disinformation spun by these companies is a big part of the problem.
