Carpenter Ants

In a different thread I mentioned having carpenter ants in my wood pile. I thought I found them all when I moved the wood pile, but I was wrong. I caught some going into and out of a hole in the bricks in my shop. I ordered Advance Carpenter Ant Bait and Maxforce Carpenter Ant Bait from Amazon but that was going to be a couple of days for delivery. So I ran over to Tractor Supply and picked up some Terro Liquid Ant Bait. Honestly, I didn't really expect much from it, just couldn't sit back for two days and wait for the heavy ordnance to come in so I thought I'd lay down some suppressing fire. Well they took to the bait like it was free government cheese and after 24 hours I can't find any ants. If anyone is looking for some good ant bait, this stuff is certainly worth a try.

Are carpenter ants small enough to fit into those? My impression of terro is that they are for small picnic ants, and I like those ants. Advance, I sprinkle after splitting for those big buggers.

They do, it's called a cat.

And after the mice are gone you can trade the cat in for a noodle bowl at the local chinese resturant.

Sevin dust will get rid of 'em for you as well. We had large carpenter ant nests in the yard every year. Sprinkle some Sevin on it and they're toast within a few days.

The missus is wary of ant bait, she's concerned that the local critters will get into it.

It's a little hard to see but there's a small hole in the front that they can walk right in. Also, the cup just slides up and down. You "activate" it by pushing the cup down on top of a little plastic spike that punches a hole in it and lets the bait drain into the plastic cup. But if they want it, they'll get in. 2 minutes after I put it down I saw the back end of 2-3 ants sticking out of the back where they had squeezed in. They were face down in the bait for several minutes. I was a little concerned they'd eat themselves to death before they could take anything back.

Is Sevin dust a slow acting poison? I'm leery of insecticides now. I think the reason they were in the shop is because I was spraying the wood pile with Triazicide to kill them. It didn't, but apparently they moved anyway.
