I bought a cast iron kettle from TSC and placed on my wood stove. After the water evaporated it began burning a bad odor...like the paint smell stoves put off when new.

Is it ok to leave the kettle dry on top of stove? After the black paint or oils are off it won't smell anymore right? The stove top reaches 900 degrees max it seems.

900 deg stove top?_g

Yeah only at peak burns for perhaps 5 minutes. Usually in 400 tp 750 range when I'm really tending to it, per my stove therm. My pipe reaches 400 at the best of times, rarely. I have 2 therms on center top and 18" up dble wall pipe.

I wouldn't worry about the kettle with a 900 degree stovetop, you better worry about the stove!

Stove seems to burn fine. Done it since new. Pleasant hearth 1200 model, small stove. Front loader with glass in door.
