Where is the best (cheapest) online source for buying replacement chain? Almost $30 for 20 inches at the local sources is too steep. Extra points for good service and cheap or free shipping.
What kind of chain are you using? Are your rakers filed down enough? I think that getting a chain sharp is almost an art (and I'm no artist), so I get your frustration.i will have to check this out. I have no idea what is happening, but i seem to smoke through chains pretty quick with the stuff I am going through.... I can't seem to get them to hold an edge. I think i'm going to grind them all back and see if I can start fresh. I have 3 that I rotate through pretty regularly. I'm keeping them out of the dirt, running the file over them whenever I fuel up, and then they seem to last about 30 minutes....
Hope grinding the rakers works for you. I've been wrestling with a couple Oregon chains that have the bent over rakers, and they seem to behave like you are describing.Using an Oregon chain. It might be an issue with the rakers, I just picked up a new depth gage. I also got out the electric chain sharpener and ground them all back. They were all pretty bad, so I'll see if that helps. I think a lot of it is the dirty elm I'm cutting smokes the blades pretty quick.
i used a flat file for the rakers, grinder for the cutting edgesHope grinding the rakers works for you. I've been wrestling with a couple Oregon chains that have the bent over rakers, and they seem to behave like you are describing.
What kind of electric sharpener do you use to grind the rakers?
