Cheaper Wood Shed Than This?

Anyone know how to construct a decent looking (wife's requirement, not mine) wood shed that would cost less than this one but still uses new materials? I don't have old wood lying around that would make it possible for me to make a shed cheaply, so everything will have to come from the local big box store.

Instead of building out the bottom like they show, find some decent condition but still free pallets. That'll cut probably half the cost out right there.

couple of notes- i dont like putting a floor unless you have a good reason too. why? it has to support a tremendous amount of wt. i hate that roof design too.

just sink some treated 4x4's 8 foor apart and put a metal roof on it. the metal will be the most expensive part. put 2x8 beams connecting and go from there. rafters are 4' OC and purlins are 2' on center. i used pre-fab fence panel for my sides, but would just put some cheap wood on if if i had to do it again.

BTW, there are plans on here for building small sheds from pallets. for the $$$ it couldbe the best move.

Get some dek blocks from Lowes for $5 each and set some 4 x 4s in them and follow shoot straights suggestion. Look through the shed thread sticky on the top of this page for ideas, should, be able to do it pretty cheap and have it look good.

I'm not sure how that roof will hold up with snow on it. All in all it looks fine If you only have to cover 1-2 cords.

Got to remember that was put out by the Makah Tribe. They are from the NW tip of Washington State (area around Neah Bay). It doesn't snow much out there in the winter. It rains a ton though.

This was an old deck we removed from someones house. they are all over Craigslist....


This was after 3 days worth of work a new 24 x 6 wood shed. had to buy $150 worth of materials

$135 for 8 sheets of galv. alum steel cut to 8' so i have $300 invested totally. if you want to put the effort into re-purposing someones deck off of craigslist. i think it was worth it....

Mine isn't too much different. I have a 12x8 ft with the roof 6'6 with a 3 1/2 pitch roof. I doo have sides on it though. got alll the material for free so that helps. My only regret is I wish it was 16 or 20' long. It holds 3 cords and then some. I use 4 cords per year on average... I wish it was a bit bigger though.

There is always good buildable pressure treated woods available on CL here. You need to be quick. The good stuff goes fast

I am trying pallet floor on gravel under my deck this year. I'll see how it goes.

Last year I was on pallets under tarps with snow on top, and that sucked a lot. I have seen lots of comment that pallets under a snow tight roof is fine, so I am going to try it.

Tell you what though, the third time my boot gets stuck in a pallet I am going to start saving to build a boot tight floor next summer.

Not so much when the boot gets stuck because of the gaps but when the boards break and trap you like a bear trap.

Decent looking? I don't know about that but this is the cheapest way I've found. Two big trees provide the lateral support and vertical support for the first section, then you can add to the structure laterally, the trees will then continue to provide the lateral support so you don't need big posts in the ground.
This is a picture of my sons, it's very small but shows how you start to build.

I went with fence posts instead of 4x4 posts. They were less then half the cost of 4x4 posts. Also went with 1x5 for the side slats and ripped them into 2.5" wide lengths on the tablesaw. Used a 2x4 up the side to attach the 1 x2.5" slats to. Used asphlat shingles for the roof. Probably cost me $200. So far, so good. If it snows more than a foot, I will be out there shoveling it off. Going to build 2, maybe 3, more to put under the deck close to the basement door so I don't have to worry about snow accumulation on them.
