Chimney fire? maybe not?

Did the usual light fire, shut door, walked away. Came back to my pipe probe therm around a touch over 1000 f
Stove top was nothing special. I shut the air and in 10 minutes temps were back in normal range

edit smoke detectors went off.

There was alot of white smoke coming our the chimney, kinda like you'd get when in startup and continued after the fire was settled.. All gone now, and I've called a sweep to come look.once the fire burns out.

its -12 c here today. what do you guys n gals think? steam or something in the pipe?

No rumbling sound, no flames out the stack, no tink noises. Wood is 3+ years old EPA stove non cat.

It sounds to me like a strong draft pulling up the pipe, not a chimney fire. Still, it wouldn't hurt to have things checked out.

That's what I'm thinking/hoping; What concerns me is the white smoke coming up even after the stove settled and got up to normal temp; normally there would be no smoke; I did have a few extra pieces of bark in there to get it going though....

I've never seen the prob them in my double wall pip that high before.; see what the sweep says I guess.

i'll bet your chimney pipe is clean now, probably cooked off any creosote you had forming

Well as long as it wasn't a fire. Maybe if it had gotten much hotter I always get the stove in the 550-700 ish range stove top when I burn, evenings and weekends and I've only put maybe 3/4-7/8 cord thru so far.. Definitely a clencher.

I don't think I'll put a fire in tonight :S

I love that instant sweaty palm "OH $HIT" feeling. I have had it twice this winter. I open the bypass, load, leave the door open to help get things going and walk away. I come back 3-6 minutes later to a roaring fire with my promer thermometer saying 1000 degrees.

I wouldn't worry too much about it. If it was for 30 minutes I would be concerned. From your description it sounds like there was no fire. BUt as others have said it doesn't hurt to get it looked at.

Thanks Andrew, thats pretty much what I did. left the air fully open; Birch bark probably took off with the kindling. I feel based on and thanks to this form, that I have good wood and burning habits; but never say never.

How do you enjoy the kodiak? A relative of mine has the 1700 and loves it.

Well; as you probably recall; its really my 1st wood stove. ( Replaced baffed out VC Resolute acclaim that came with the house ) But this is my second full season on it. Other than the odd operator error *cough* its needed nothing and is easy to operate and get consistent results. I like it, but have nothing to really compare with I don't load it for over nights,and I suspect the 1700 would be better for round the clock burns

Have you burned much wood? What's the price of wood down that way (I am looking at possibly moving to Halifax)?

I think you're right. The 1700 has a larger firebox and would likely burn better overnight. Is there any particular reason you never tried it?

I'll probably have gone thru a cord by the time I stop burning. I haven't bought wood YET as he PO of the house left me lots. I am going to get a cord this year to stay ahead though. Stay tuned on price.
Installing the 1700 was only a few 100 more would have meant extending the hearth a foot or so. For where it is in the room it would have been intrusive.( I think ) Also the room its in is only 18x16 and is the tv /rec room. With the layout and size of the house the 1200 IS able to keep the place comfortable up and down; and keep the electric baseboard off

It sounds like you've got game! Your electricity rates are fairly high..no electricity is nice! I saw a report on CBC news about a woman in NB who burning $1400 of electricity in a MONTH Ouch.
