Well it's been a great burning season. Saw a lot of great info in the posts and tons of great photos. So now onto clean outs and preventive maintenance for the summer season. Looking for ideas, tricks and tips and best practices for how you clean your wood boiler.

I ran the brush through my chimney one last time, scrapped the creosote from the walls of the fire box and cleaned the heat exchanger. I tossed in some moisture absorbing packs for poops and giggles.

Check the water one last time to get the chemicals right before shutting down.

I scrape and clean boiler, then brush chimney once a season in the spring. I spray an entire can of WD-40 over every surface of the boiler fire side. I don't know if it does anything but it makes me feel better, and never a spot of rust anywhere in the fall, and no it wont explode I also put a metal plate over the top of the flue (on the roof) to prevent any convection or moisture from moving through any part of the system. Put up a post-it not on the boiler to remind me to remove plate before first fire in the fall........

Depending on if your boiler is in a humid basement I'd consider a 40+ watt incandescent light bulb in the burn chamber to keep moisture from condensing. If your flue is not able to be covered from the top like mine, tape up the air intake on the boiler to keep humid air out.

Entire process once a season takes about 1.5 hours, most of which is scraping and vacuuming out all the boiler's crevices and cleaning access doors.

I scrape all the excess creosote I can from the interior of the boiler. Brush the chimney, and walls then i fill it up with dry card board, burn it and follow up with one more brushing. This may not work on any and all boilers so be careful. It works like a charm on mine.
