Are there any products that can be found readily that will clean the black soot/creosote from the nice brick in my hearth prior to my conversion from an open fire place for a stove. I realize brick is pourus and I wont be able to remove it totally but I would like to do the best I can and a brush just isn't doing much of anything. Thanks for any advice.

It seems basically a tar like substance, I wonder if prep solve would disolve it. If not a mild acid. Craig, you are the man here, what do you say?

That may not be as redily as you were hoping but check your local hearth retailer.
