I just had a co-worker pop her head into my office to ask how big of a tree i would be willing to take. The she happens to mention that it is right by the house and up in the lines. I advised her to try getting the power company to limb it and we would go from there. What is the best approach in the situation? Waiting for her to send pictures.

Absolute best option is have someone else get on the ground, then take it from there. ( maybe the power company) it sounds like a typical craigs list ad. Around here power co contractors just cut enough to let the wires pass through.

I would think they would piece it down if in a yard or by a house of the homeowner makes enough noise. As a forester i can say those hackers are one of the worst things for trees it looks ugly but also the stubs rot out and the suckers that sprout back have a weak attachment point and are more likely to fall on the house or lines than they were before the tree was touched in most places.
Yes, they definitely make some eye sores. Not planning to let it stay that way, just hoping to get the pros to cut it back until it is safe for me to handle.

Jacktheknife do you have Alliant Energy as the power company? I live in Nora Springs and my mom works for Alliant and said they will come take the line down and re-install it for free. I have a dead Elm right next to our power line going to the pole with the meter on it and that's what Im going to have done. Nice to see there are more north Iowans on here.
Be very careful, Jack......one slip up and you could be in a big pickle! Risky trees near houses can land you a big lawsuit without the right equipment and know-how to take 'em down.......

I do, but the lady with the tree has Prarie something. I am hoping to get Alliant to come trim my silver maple before we drop it, but a disconnect would be ok too.
In a few words. PROFESSIONAL TREE SERVICE WITH THE PROPER INSURANCE! Then cut it up & haul it away. Trees break things when it goes bad. A C
In my mind, it's perfectly OK...in fact in many cases the most advisable option...to tell someone, no matter who the someone is, that you don't feel you have the skills, experience, or trusted assistance required to safely complete the task they've described. Suggest how they might proceed to find a service provider and what you may be able to contribute to the project after the tree is safely down. Just my thoughts, Rick
Saw the pictures today. I told her to get it on the ground and I will do the rest. Not sure if I will actually score this, but at least I won't be gambling with safety.

Water filled wood is an excellent conductor of electricity , if wire insulation is intact and, If U contact it with a conductor ,such as ,tree or metal, you just might be ok, but !! Think of it this way , Would U attempt to cut down an aluminum antenna tower that might fall on a power line
