Convection blower whine

The convection blower on my Big E just started to make a loud grinding whine. First issue with it since installed in 2008. Any advice as far as How long it will last until it stops completely. I just cleaned the cage and the stove but it is still grinding.

anywhere from 2 days to 2 months, depends on how bad that noise really is. When we get customers pricing new fan due to noise, it's usally about 2-3 weeks after the noise get bad, that the fan stops all together

I just took it apart, It is a sealed ball bearing unit, does that mean I cannot oil it? It is a FASCO 115v, 1.5a, what will a replacement cost?

If you look all around the unit, do you see any ports like these? If you do, they are the oiling ports. Put 2-3 drops of "3 in 1" oil, or any non-detergent 20w

Even if you don't see those ports as imacman pointed out. Do you see the open bearing on the end of the motor that imacman posted? A couple drops in that area will allow the bearing to "suck" some in. Also, if you can "drop" some carefully on the front bearing, do so also.

They may be sealed... But they are are not sealed solid. It's a dust cover that has clearance around the edges.

Yes, they only have 2 ports per motor.

If it stops, if the stove is on high enough heat setting, the over temp switch should shut the stove down. But if you are sure the motor is going to fail, then I'd shut it down before.

It stopped this morning. What can I expect to pay for a new one. Any install advice?

Depends on whether you want just the motor, or the whole blower assembly. Motors can be had at Grainger AFAIK, but bring the old one with you to match up.

If you want the whole blower assembly, Eric at Kinsman Stoves might be able to get you one....he's a Breckwell dealer and will give discounts if you mention you're a hearth.com member.

He would also be the person to talk to about install info.

If you tear it down you can get bearings CHEAP! 608 series, get the EMQ grade [electric motor quality] Its not hard to replace them. I can do mine in 30 minutes. Just sayin!

I agree that replacement bearings are the cheapest way to go if the motor coil windings and everything else is good. I was just showing the blowers that would work.

Sharke40, whether you think your way of fixing it is the best or not, the forum is here to have members get multiple opinions. It's possible that a person other than yourself may not have the mechanical ability or tools to fix something like this, regardless of how simple it may seem. Don was just offering another option.

how do you go about converting the unit from oil able sleeve type bearings to 608 emq ball bearings? the new ball bearings should last much longer than the junk sleeve bearings currently used on those motors

No need to go anywhere? Don was offering his opinion, just as you did. Some people are not as mechanically inclined as others and others budgets may have more room. Donny Boy is also a Dealer, so selling is always in the forefront of his mind.

As imacman stated, this place is what it is because of the eclectic range of people, that have a wide range of skills, and opinions that all have place. Without that, Hearth wouldn't have the success it has.

Calm down, take a breath, and stick around. Your opinion is still gonna be in this thread for numerous years and many people will see it from a "Search". I'm sure it will save many individuals money to replace the bearings. This is info that will be here for the masses, for years to come

IMO, we don't need anyone here that feels that their "suggestions" or "opinions" are the only ones that should be considered. No loss.

Yep, one year later! Still productive input in my search query for a new blower. However, like others stated, that would be out of my current skillset to replace bearings in an unfamiliar application. For a guy like me, I'd LOVE to save the $$$$ and replace a bearing, but it would be more practical just to jump to the whole blower to know I'm not wasting time and possible danger to my family by not knowing what I'm doing. Great options, but don't have to be so snarky, Sharke!
