My wife's farmhouse has an exterior Fire Chief wood furnace that's ducted to the house. Now the insurer won't issue a policy because of it. Selling it is an option; but I wonder if its ductwork could be removed such that it could be used as a direct-heat wood stove inside a house with an approved chimney?

It's convective by design. The blower is necessary. Though not appropriate as a freestanding stove, properly installed, it could make a good shop furnace.
