I have a standing dead cherry on my property. It's about 18 inches at the base. I cut into it about 2 inches and the first inch or so was really soft and rotten. Is this tree worth taking down?

Standing dead.....heartwood should be okay, and most likely will burn well. You may need to get up the bole a few feet before you find good wood.

Get it cut and split if only 1 inch, take every thing that is good . Be ready for next year.

cherry is known to punk out for the first inch or two(sap wood) heart wood will be good stuff in a year. I have lots of it.

I would find a way to cover the stack of punky cherry. If the punk gets wet it will stay wet and the wood won't dry out.

I find there is more punk near the base on dead standing trees. Usually it gets better a few feet up.

Sometimes I let the woodpeckers have a tree if it is questionable or hard to get to.

I guess you will only know if you cut all the way thru how much solid is left but Cherry is a good candidate for solid heartwood.
Be careful, cherry is notorious for dropping limbs when they are healthy, so a dead one can be hazardous to your head. Have someone with you as a spotter.
The trees are worth taking.

Took down a Cherry last March, and was shocked at how healthy it was as I bucked from top to bottom. Then I got to the last three feet. 50% punky at least. I split small and it's in the stove as I type.

Yeah cut that some b up asap......

Cut that standing dead cherry down today. Everything almost went as planned. I missed my target by a foot. But overall it went good.

That looks like a nice tree. Still has its bark on!

I love the old old pieces. I cut and split some old stuff this year, no bark almost looked rotten, but I knew better. Beautiful heartwood 18 -20% moisture on the inside of course. Great stuff!
