How bout one of the hybrid fyres from lopi, heres some pics from a new thread. Big glass! I would make some nice granite slabs on the sides to fill what the stove doesn't cover

That is actually the fireplace I would love to have. The 30-NC on one side for the cold days and a smaller stove next to it for milder days.

I love the Montpellier, if only it were bigger. I don't see any wood burning inserts bigger than that unfortunately.
Has anyone seen the Grate Wall Of Fire? It looks kinda gimmicky.
Sorry to hear that, I love mine, when I first put mine in it looked tiny compared to my opening and then I got used to the size. But hopefully you find something to accommodate your needs.....
Hi I'm a mason in ct. What you could do is go right over the top of the brick with a thin stone veneer and make the opening to better accommodate a insert. I have the fpx large flush insert and it heats great. If you're interested let me know I can help you estimate your costs.
They also have a Extra large hybrid fyre. My large is 3 cubic ft. The extra large FPX 44 elite is 4.3 cubic feet. Not sure what the height clearance requirements are but mine is a lot of glass at 3 so at 4.3 the extra large must be a monster.

I don't really want to shrink the fireplace, my dilemma is that I don't want to lose most of the ambiance of a big open fire. My ideal insert would have a giant glass window (at least 30 inches wide by 20 inches tall) and be useable with the door open for ambiance.
If I got a 100lb cast iron fireback would that throw off at least enough heat to be noticeable?
I'll have to check when I get home. The manuals posted online don't include the glass measurement
I know you keep saying how you want the ambiance of a big viewing area that comes close to matching your present experience from your five foot wide opening. However, since they don't make inserts of free standing stoves with anything close to that size glass door you probably need to accept you aren't going to be able to get exactly what you currently want. If you listen to most forum members I think you'll hear them say that they get a great deal of enjoyment out of watching the fires in their stoves/inserts with the size glass doors that typically come in them. I know I spend about an hour every night lying in front of my stove after my last reload for the evening and find the experience mesmerizing. I'm just saying that sometimes we get locked onto an idea and don't want to let go of it, but once we do and try something different that we didn't think we would like as much we are happily surprised to find out the new experience is even better than the old!
And the hybrid fyres glass is huge! I would be happy sticking it in that fire place

I hear you on the ambiance, we have a 4' W x 3' H fireplace with a siiting hearth in our vacation house. Its mainly used in spring/summer so putting a stove in it is not an issue. I do like the idea of that Buck 91 (34" wide), 4.4 cu. ft box, 23" NS, that's some serious heat.
The glass on the flush hybrid is 2 ft × 13" .my house is 2000 Sq ft and I haven't turned on my boiler for heat yet this winter. I build fireplaces but they are the most inefficient source of heat. I built a real fireplace in my addition last year and put the insert in.the second fireplace in the center of house hasn't had a fire in it since.
Sorry... just stumbled on this one. This user has a lintel height issue to deal with. Please tell us about the construction. Date? Lintel material?

They look similar, but one is in the old kitchen in the house and the other is in the summer kitchen. Both hearth floors are new, the brick one installed by me last year, and the stone one being part of a 1994 addition. The stone one was raised up almost a foot above the original floor (to bring it to the same level as the floor in the house, when the summer kitchen and house were joined), which makes that lintel a little low. I've caught the back of my head on it many times, forgetting how low it is when I'm in the fireplace and stand up. For scale, those are Jotul Firelight stoves in both fireplaces... not small!
The reason I ask about your construction and age is, I'm wondering if that's replica work, or a later modification on an old fireplace. Could you remove the raised brick hearth, and get back down to floor level? That would really open up your options.

I think you'll find that most people that seek out a stove that can be run with the doors open (for ambiance) use the screens once or twice, toss 'em in the basement! Sounds like a good idea, but, in the real world, kinda like using a rotary dial phone after having a cell phone, just don't happen much! Also, you can't get those mesmerizing secondary flames with the doors open, heat output/efficiency suffers too. Like others have already said, once you have an insert in there, you quickly will get used to the new look.
Maybe ya could put a large magnifying glass in front of a small insert, make it look HUGE!
As for the fireback...if you get close enough...
