At my mother's house, the fireplace is quite unique (to me at least)

There is an old label: Benefire firebox assembly 1002-56

I believe her home was built in the 70's.

There are 3 controls just under the doors.

1. Wooden knob that slides to the left or right about 2 inches

2.under that a black plastic dial that clicks when turned all the way to the left

3. A horizontal toggle switch under the dial.

Dial and switch control the fan, but I'm uncertain about the slider. Moving it left or right doesn't seem to do anything.

Inside the firebox, the "ceiling" has 5 holes, and there is no arm , or flue opening device.

Is it possible my flue isn't able to be closed?

As I’m sure you know, that’s a very inefficient unit. It’s not surprising that there’s no real control over the fire. In order to operate, it’s got to suck lots of air out of the room, so closing it down very much won’t be an option.
