Electric log splitter I now have!

Out of the blue, my boss told me he bought me this electric log splitter from Northern Tool and that it would be shipped directly to my home!

Yesterday when I got home from work, this is what I found in my driveway! As a first year burner, I've been pretty overwhelmed with the axe splitting so this baby should help me out a lot!

I picked up a similar one on CL this past fall, and it has been very useful. I still hand split a lot when the wood is cooperative, but for tougher, stringier pieces it's well worth having. Most challenging thing about mine is that its cord is very short, and the machine is intolerant of any but the heaviest extension cords.

Good to know. I haven't unpacked it yet so I don't know how long the cord is. My work area is well equipped with plenty of AC outlets in close proximity.

Velvet, yea my boss is a pretty good guy. He recognizes the contributions and appreciates his employees.

I've had an electric wood splitter for a while but hardly use it because I got a gas model.
There are plenty of pieces it won't split, but more pieces it will split.
I use a square shaped split as a makeshift spacer so it doesn't have to retract all the way.

I'm thinking it should satisfy my needs. 99% of what I'm splitting is cordwood that was already split. Since I have the smaller firebox, delivered cordwood is usually split bigger than I like it to be so this should work perfectly.

It'll be good for that. Plus, you can split in the shed or garage when it's nasty out.

Wow. That's a cool boss. I got the Harbor Freight version this year for Christmas. I have been very happy with it. I run mine on a 25 or 50 ft 12 gauge extension cord. I have gotten threw a bunch of wood that I could not split with my maul alone. So happy to have this unit. Good luck with it!

Gf got me one for Christmas. She didn't know I just acquired a dht 27 ton hydraulic. I didn't want to tell her either. Lol.

We were going to send it back but the freight charge wasn't worth it so I kept it. I gotta say it supplements the dht nicely. Plenty of uses and it's a lot more powerful than I expected. Was pleasantly surprised.

I have it in my den. Lol

Are you splitting and filling the stove with that being in your stove room?........

I use it to split some of the bigger stuff down so I can pack the stove nicely. Basically fine tune the stuff going into the stove. Is it needed? Probably not. Once the burning season is over I'll put it in the basement or shed.

Same here but I keep my electric in the basement near the boiler and my wood so that I can generate kindling and pare down some of the very large pieces.

Yeah I think one in the basement for starting fires would be cool. They need to be close to the outlet and they don't work as well in cold weather anyways. Im sure though that I would have to try it just outside the garage in warmer weather though. My truck is my wheel barrel I usually stack everything less than 9" diameter and throw the larger pieces off to the side to split with a maul. With this I'd prob stack the larger pieces to one side, off load what I can drive over to garage split and drive back to pile to stack splits.

I've got a similar one from Ryobi and use a heavy extension. It needs the full amps on a 15 amp circuit. If there are a few lights on the same circuit, they dim a bit when it goes on. Anything more than that and the breaker pops.

I have had an electric splitter for three years. I am very impressed by it. It will split most anything less than 12". Bigger ones i have to. Bust in half then it will handle taking chunks off. Split 2-3 cords a yr, this has been a back saver. Remember to use large, short cord and open hydralic system nut.

What a cool boss....one of my neighbors spent $150 AUS on a small chinese electric splitter and it has lasted him 3 seasons so far...thats less than the daily rate to hire one at the local shop...haha....im thinking about getting one...!
